Chapter Meetings News

The February 14, 2020 meeting was hosted at Clark Insurance and made available live on ZOOM.  Thanks to Janice Arsenault, CEES and ACE Fitness Instructor, Director of Health & Wellness for the Maine DOT.  Her presentation “Ergonomics from Behind the Wheel” touched on the science, practical tips, and health benefits from addressing driver ergonomic issues.

The October 17th, 2109 meeting of Maine ASIS welcomed ASSP members to an Overview of NFPA 3000 Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response hosted at the Cape Elizabeth Town Center Fire Station.  The program covered difficulties encountered when responding to an ASHER incident, the Whole Community Approach, the Prepare/Respond/Recover concepts, the integration of responders during the response, and  (Unified Command) Competencies for responders (PD, Fire, and EMS).  Presenter Robert Duval, a chief fire officer, is the NFPA NE Reg. Dir. and Fire Investigator and serves as the point of contact for stakeholders in the northeast.

The August 29, 2019 meeting was hosted by Maine Medical Center in Portland, followed by Social at Salvage BBQ. We were given a welcome and briefing by Tom Hatch and his team which covered the institution’s history, operations and EH&S/Emergency Preparedness programs.  Sean Ryan, CSP with Turner then conducted a tour up to the rooftop and new twin medical heliport under construction.  After a tunnel walk and some touring, there were good eats and discussion at Salvage, with another Turner project humming outside on Congress Street.

The April 23, 2019 ASSP/ASIS Joint Technical Meeting was held around the Maine Partners Emergency Preparedness Conference at Great Wall Buffet Restaurant in Augusta. Joseph Donoghue spoke to the group of ASSP, ASIS and DEAIHA members on a Business Continuity Case Study ‘Corporate HQ is On Fire, Now What?‘  

The March 12, 2019 Technical Meeting and Networking was hosted in Portland at Clark Insurance. Tim McCarty spoke to Curbing Distractions and Fatigue Behind the Wheel” informing attendees on several facets of dealing with fleet and personal driving distraction, with some unusual findings on fatigue involved in many near misses and crashes.

The November 8, 2018 meeting of DEAIHA welcomed ASSP members in Falmouth at Rivalries.  David May presented on “Using the TLV’s – The Fine Print.”

The September 19, 2018 Joint Technical Meeting with DEAIHA was held around the Maine Safety Conference at the Great Wall Chinese Buffet in Augusta.  Tom Stevens, General Dynamics BIW Welding Department Supt. presented “Respiratory Protection in Shipyard” to an enthusiastic group.  A very informative and well attended event with Tom taking us through a journey of problem definition, equipment evaluations and developments working with vendors, and refining the business case over time to support getting the right kind of protection into the hands of workers.

The August 16, 2018 Let’s Network! Social Mixer and Light Business was held in Topsham at Sea Dog Brewing, a successful summer event!  While many had other places to be, our group of old and new acquaintances enjoyed conversation and refreshments, as well as some great door prizes courtesy of Alexis and Tim.  Phil did the count, and among the group was a total of 253.5 years of safety and health experience!!  We look forward to seeing you at the next one.
