Crooker Construction and Precast of Maine are looking to hire an experienced and professional Safety Director to oversee the safety department and work with the employees to encourage and support a culture of safety first.
In the role of Safety Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for the direct supervision of the Field Safety Engineer. Together they will complete the day to day work of the department as well as look ahead, analyze trends, plan, and implement policies and programs while working towards the goal of continuous safety improvement for all employees.
While managing the safety department, the responsibilities of the Safety Director and the department will include, but not be limited to, the following duties: • Management o Day to day management and oversight of the safety department o Lead and coach safety employees as well as all employees with regard to safety • General Safety o Continuously monitor areas for identifying risk and initiating processes to minimize risk. o Work closely with the employees in the office as well as the field to determine safety priorities in order to create and sustain a culture that values safety. o Analyze employee and job hazard safety data and conduct risk assessments; develop and implement a safety performance improvement plan. o Actively participate in the industry safety networks; leverage expertise to other facilities and help develop corporate standards, best practices, and guidance. o Represent the company at industry agency meetings and organization events (AGC, ABC, OSHA, MSHA, DOT, etc.). • Accident and/or Injury Management o Administer general liability claims and conduct appropriate root cause analysis and make certain corrective action is taken where health and safety hazards exist. o Participate in the investigation of incidents and injuries and work with appropriate carriers and insurance personnel in preparation for hearings and external investigations. o Serve as the point of contact / subject matter expert for emergency personnel. • Policies and Procedures o Oversee the development, planning, and implementation of health and safety policies and procedures (site/project safety, illness and injury prevention, ergonomics, etc.) for the entire company. o Conduct worksite audits and inspections to ensure compliance and safe process and procedures. Work with onsite staff and management to implement corrections based on audit and inspection findings. o Review and update company stretching program. o Actively support preventative injury initiatives. • Training o Develop and deliver safety training material; ensure a tracking system is in place. o Organize and conduct sections of annually required training (first aid, OSHA, MSHA, traffic control, etc.) o Oversee or conduct new employee orientation training program o Develop and deliver safety training material; ensure a tracking system is in place. • Regulatory Compliance o Maintain all required records applicable to safety and health compliance (i.e. OSHA 300 Logs, MSHA specific standards, incident investigations, SDS’s, dig safes, etc.). o Administer worker’s compensation program. o Represent the company and lead walk-arounds during regulatory MSHA and OSHA inspections. Following the inspections, prepare and execute action plans to close audit findings. o Be the company expert and advise on compliance matters and interact with state and federal agencies as needed. Education/Experience • Bachelor’s degree with a safety related focus from a four-year college or university, and/or 10+ years of practical work experience. General Knowledge/Skill Requirements • Comprehensive knowledge of the safety requirements in the construction industry • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements (MSHA, OSHA, MPUC, Workers’ Comp, DOT, etc.) • Demonstrated knowledge/experience with local, state and federal laws and other government compliance regulations including OSHA, MSHA, and DOT. • Ability to be responsive and persuasive at all levels of the organization. • Ability to coach employees and management through complex issues and make recommendations • Effective communication and analytical skills. • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects/priorities. • Strong customer focus and sense of urgency to business needs. • Strong attention to detail. • Proficient with all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint • Self – motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision. • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the public at all times supporting the company’s mission and objectives. • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors as needed. • The willingness to work extended hours and possible night and/or weekend work • A valid driver’s license Benefits: Vacation, holidays, Health & Life insurance, dental, 401k and profit sharing.
