# S00517JP Department: Facilities Management Administration Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety serves as a safety and environmental compliance manager, overseeing the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive environmental health and safety program for Bowdoin College, including off-campus locations. He/she ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations and standards- including but not limited to – radiation safety, environmental health, chemical control, industrial hygiene, OHSA, and fire safety. The Associate Director partners with academic and administrative departments to ensure proper training and compliance with applicable laws and mandates. The position will provide leadership for policy management and development and procedures for safety compliance (including lab safety, lab audits, etc.) and for emergency response protocols. The Associate Director will maintain information databases and files as required to meet all safety, environmental and regulatory requirements. The Associate Director supervises one Safety Specialist and a part-time student.
BS/BA degree in related science or engineering field required; advanced degree in related science or engineering field preferred. Also required: demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DEP, NFPA, SDS, and state/local regulations. Must be trained in RCRA Hazardous waste regulations and in the transportation of DOT Hazardous materials. Must be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups and key campus constituents, work independently, resolve conflicts and be self-motivated with attention to detail. Experience required in project management and overseeing contracted services for various safety inspections and equipment testing.
Strong computer skills required, including the use of spreadsheets and databases. Ability to learn Bowdoin’s computer based maintenance management system, currently WebTMA. Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy required.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
This position requires at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational environmental health and safety. Supervisory experience required. Knowledge of laboratory safety and/or college campus EH & S programs, preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of ability to quickly assess situations, speak in public, and make recommendations/decisions required. Experience with related record keeping and reporting requirements required. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHHM), or equivalent certification preferred.
Standard Work Days and Hours
Generally, Mon – Fri, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. but may be required to work at other times as incidents or emergencies demand. On call via home and cellular telephone during all hours not present at work.
