The University of Maine System is seeking to hire a Safety Specialist. The work location is in Portland, Maine at the University of Southern Maine.

 

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the annual salary range is $50,000 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Safety Specialist will be required to work closely with local campus personnel and provide consultation, development and implementation of safety programs at off campus locations.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Provide sound technical advice on State and Federal regulatory requirements and other safety and life safety concerns.
  • Develop occupational safety and life safety procedures for a wide range of business lines and operational units.  Identify areas where implementation could be improved through the modification of programs to better suit departmental needs.
  • Assist with or conduct client observations (audits) to establish baselines and measure changes in compliance with Bureau of Labor Standards (BLS), Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, University policies, and written programs.  Partner with area or discipline management to guide personal accountability at the program level.
  • Help establish guidelines and review / write safety programs after stakeholdering with appropriate parties.  Work to continuously improve Safety Management’s (SM’s) relationships with Facilities Management, Faculty, Research personnel, and other University communities.
  • Develop, review and deliver live, video conferencing, and webinar occupational safety and life safety training to all business lines and operational units as needed, identified and directed.
  • Provide sound guidance to facilitate safe handling, detection methods, work practices, and labeling systems of hazardous materials.
  • Conduct incident investigations and recommend sound mitigation techniques to clients which mirror their resources as closely as possible.  When not possible, recommend resources be allocated by the affected groups management to handle the occupational or life safety concerns.
  • Report instances of noncompliance and follow up on completion of corrective actions with department liaison and direct manager / SM chain of command to foster accountability.
  • Work independently, as a team member and with community sources such as employees, students and volunteers.  Candidate must also be organized, and able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail, are required.
  • Prepare reports including observations, analyses, and recommendations for the correction and control of safety hazards and matters of compliance.
  • Collect, correlate, and disseminate educational and informative materials relative to safety methods and procedures.
  • Assist in safety program development, implementation, and recordkeeping.
  • Respond to SM related emergencies, incidents, and other types of similar concerns.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Education:A Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational or Life Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Emergency Management, Occupational Health, Life or Physical Sciences, Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Experience may be substituted for Bachelor Degree requirements only in the following circumstances:

The candidate has seven (7) years of directly related occupational or life safety military experience.

OR

The candidate has seven (7) years of progressively more technical occupational / life safety experience AND a certification by an appropriate body such as: OSHA Technical Institute, National Fire Protection Association, National Safety Council, Board of Certifying Safety Professionals, or the American Society of Safety Professionals.

 

Required Experience:

At least three (3) years of occupational or life safety experience in addition to degreed educational qualifications listed above.
